Arcitic will be ice free?

A youtube video by new scientist about the arctic ice and how it could be gone in 2008. I regret posting this because there really is no explaination or evidence except that… ice is melting… But it is interesting nonetheless, as it shows some great radar footage from a satellite from 2007 to early 2008:

Making the rich more rich

I initially started selling books on half.com/ebay because I have a lot of old text books I’d like to get rid of. I guess I didn’t really care that I wouldn’t be getting full value for it, so I would always cut the lowest price available for a given book. This also helped ensure the book would be sold. It actually worked! In a short period of time I had sold four of my books and had made more money than expected. It was all good.

Then I began noticing things – like the same exact ebay user buying more books from me. Why would they keep coming back, and what are the odds they would have needed books of topic A and B at the same time? After inspecting their account, it appears they have had over ten thousand transactions! Their comments and feedback section consisted of many book sellers, from what I could tell by their user name.

The slimeball was just reselling books he could find cheaply and make a profit! Screw this half.com is lame. I’m going to take all my books off it right now actually.

If Everyone Had a Gun

How often do you hear about pencil stabbings in the news? Rarely. Few killers decide to wreak their evil desires via a sharpened number 2. But why not? They’re just as deadly as a gun. It would be all to easy to sneak from room to room, silently stabbing every isolated occupant in the jugular. Pencils can be hidden easily, pass through metal detectors, and few places restrict their usage.

After reading this article on cnn.com

One is left feeling that perhaps we should all have a chance to defend ourselves. With the likely event that someone fires upon us in a classroom, should students continue to be forced to be defenseless? Afterall there is little a school can do to defend against a killer.

With this vigilante mentality we have to assume that more violence will take place. As guns would become involved with everyday life, they will also become involved with situations which are defending against less and less serious threats. The defender who shoots the attacker with the knife, the defender who shoots the man who punches, the defender who shoots the screaming maniac.

Putting power into the civilians hand is the truest form of freedom. It is the purest, most secure form of protection a government can give its people. Yet it creates a terrible state of democracy, where almost no one has the right to trial before they’re shot and killed. It’s not too distant of a step from anarchy. A step which seems to resemble the current chaos which wreaks in the middle east. With the power given to the people, factions can rise up, government loses control, and this is where a true ‘anarchy’ state becomes more real.
I can imagine the daily ritual of the future classes. Before class begins, the wise professor firmly holds his hand on his holstered gun while keeping a close eye on the students entering the classroom. The students enter one by one, and those with guns must say so during role call – this way if a gun fight breaks out, there will be a log of who was wielding what weaponry. Bullets and guns will be easier to track down, but if the attack should happen to have stolen the gun from an unsuspecting peer, framing could take place. So it is important to have a monitor of some sort in every classroom. A video camera or guard to supervise the gun fights.

In our old country we had a sense of trust which eliminated the need for all of this discussion. How long until we must we escape and create a new colony of our own to escape the mad society we live in?

China as the next superpower (and india, )

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/worldnews.html?in_article_id=559133&in_page_id=1811

A quote from the article:

“Napoleon III compared China to a sleeping giant and warned: “When China awakes, she will shake the world.”

After a long hibernation, China, and her 1.3 billion people – twice the population of the U.S. and EU combined – is awaking almost overnight. “

A very interesting read. If I ever had a reason to learn Chinese, this would be it! Having twice the population of the US and EU combined doesn’t necessarily make any country powerful on it’s own. Economy is a big factor. And when your economy is consuming half the worlds cement and one third of it’s steel, yet is /still/ owed debt by other super powers, you know you’re in good shape.

The recent purchase of Jaguar and Land Rover by tata motors is just one of many examples where the east is taking over the west.

The Olympics, a western tradition, being hosted in the Chinese capitol despite the protests of its unpopular activity in Tibet.

Work around the world is being run by Chinese immigrants.

The US may debate whether or not it is in recession all it wants. What is clear is that it will not be the leading superpower for very long. With our military and economy strained so much for oil supplies in the mid-east, now(and the coming years) would be a fatal time for another country to attack us – should they have some reason or desire.

Not that I am worried or anything. Just like being mindful of international events ;)

They’re now using vans to monitor radar on the Edens since the new construction. 375$ and you won’t get pulled over, they just mail you a ticket for speeding.

Concerning Hillaries Rocky theme song

I find it ironic how all the dumbest quotes and actions make it into mainstream news. While this gem from Obama is hardly mentioned with big time news companies.

“But we got to remember Rocky was a movie,” Obama continued. “And so is the idea that someone can fight for working people and at the same time, embrace the broken system Washington, where corporate lobbyists use their clout to shape laws to their liking.”
