Snow Fort

This year saw lots of snow. Conditions were prime for fort-making and me and my bro built a huge fort.

Really, it was at least 6 feet. It was built, what? 2 weeks ago? But the weather got warmer and it shrank a bit.

It now lies in a heaping mass of broken snowballs… So long fort!

On the bright side, by tomorrow we may have up to an additional 9 inches of snow.

The Armadillo Lizard

This is by far the coolest looking lizard I have ever seen! When frightened, it will defend itself by rolling into a ball and grabbing its tail- just like a mammalian armadillo. If that’s not enough, the creature has it’s own unique set of deadly spikes that would make a bearded dragon cry in shame.

Radio from the Far Side

It appears that NASA has taken proposals from an MIT team to build a 2 square KM radio satellite. The satellite will be free from all (or most?) of Earths interfeating signals. I would imagine that somehow, there would be faint, weak singals interfearing, but I suppose I could be wrong.

With all the satellites near mars, the sun, and in outer orbit, you would think that some radiation would rach the far side. But the amount of radio waves would be far, far less than most other places. It will be exciting, though I still feel that finding extra terrestrial radio signals is a long shot.

One future advantage to this will be communication to Mars and beyond. I can see this becoming a very solid foundation to any future space missions in the solar system. -

The Frozen Great Lakes

Recently I found this image on Nasa’s Earth Observatory:

The Frozen Great Lakes

A larger (5mb) image can be found here

Despite the hype over global warming and all of it’s anti-snow effects, this image shows that there’s still snow aplenty for the Great Lakes!

Last year held much less snowfall(from what I can remember). If my assumtions are true, then the whole region also probably experienced less snowfall too. What caused such a change is beyond me. But I do know that we are currently enduring solar minimum… Which if you’re not familiar with, is when the sun is displaying the least number of sunspots. It also means there is a lower level of energy output and generally less coronal mass ejections. When the sun hits solar maximum again in 2012, I expect we will not be experiencing such strong winters.

Interestingly I was able to find an article from 2003 describing that three of the great lakes had been frozen through mid March. Will this year see similar results with lake Erie?

Ahhhh so glad to know I’m surrounded by all of this fresh water…

Sometimes coming up with a color scheme can be difficult. Especially once every element is taken into consideration. Being design-handicapped, I find this tool to come in handy. Easy to use, powerful, and just awesome.
